The Family YMCA has two YCC job opportunities for 2015, through employment on either a GARDEN or a TRAIL crew. One application, for either position, will be available beginning December 1, 2014.

The state of New Mexico's YCC provides funding to perform important works for public good. YCC members contribute to the quality of life for all New Mexicans, striving for healthy natural resources and lasting community benefits. Through hands-on training, education and learning opportunities, crew members develop transferable work skills, and receive coaching on how to apply learned skills in future education or work settings.
Since 2009, the YCC has provided funding to the Y to hire TRAIL crews to improve existing footpaths damaged by recent fires and to create new sustainable trails. In 2015, the YCC awarded funding to the Y for a TRAIL and a separate GARDEN crew. The GARDEN crew will forward a community education garden on a one-acre plot of Los Alamos County land that the Y has been granted use of through an RFP process.
Our YCC goals are to 1)employ youth from area communities to facilitate friendships and positive relationships; 2)provide leadership and job skills; 3)provide an opportunity for youth to learn important environmental and ecosystem concepts in a context where they are providing meaningful service to the community; 4)provide an opportunity for youth to socialize and participate with peers in a supervised environment that emphasizes respect and responsibility and 5)encourage graduation and continuing education.
GARDEN YCC training includes writing press releases and basic marketing, local historical agriculture, production agriculture, and nutrition and food preparation.
TRAIL YCC training includes riparian restoration, trail construction and maintenance, fire ecology data collection and application to watershed management projects, training in firefighter and trail-building tool use and care, erosion control, bridge building and installation, native plant and animal identification, and other locally relevant ecology concepts.
Eligibility requirements for Youth Conservation Corps members:
Enrollment in the program shall be limited to individuals who, at the time of enrollment, are:
(1) unemployed;
(2) are New Mexico residents;
(3) are in-school or out-of-school youth;
(4) are between the ages of 14 and 25 years of age
Note: 14 & 15 year-olds must provide a work permit available from the Department of Labor or schools
