Our mission is to build individual, family and community strength by focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, and to ensure access for all. We exist to serve the needs of our communities, but we couldn't address these needs without collaborators in Los Alamos and Española. Using the following links, you may read more about the YMCA's impact on personal lives and in our communities. Some recent major partnerships are detailed below.
The state of New Mexico's Youth Conservation Corps awarded The Family YMCA significant grants from 2009-2015 to employee youth during the summer in public works for community good, to provide them with marketable job skills, and to encourage continuing education. Work has concentrated on improving fireline trails, addressing wildfire erosion problems, creating new trails and building friendships among these neighboring Española, Los Alamos, and area youth who are hired.
A separate grant from the Delle Foundation funds the Y's Earth Service Corps (YES Corps) volunteer summer long service-learning program for youth ages 11 to 16. We partner with Los Alamos County to address community trail issues. Recent work by these volunteers is detailed here.
The United Way of Northern New Mexico/Los Alamos has been a key partner of the Y since we opened our doors in 1955. UWNNM/LA has provided funding for scholarships ensuring that everyone has access to our enriching after school and summer camp programs, and they have supported our youth programs so that we can provide a wide array of activities to our kids. They have been a key supporter of our Española Teen Center, as well.
